Double medallists in para-dressage at Summer Games

Thompson-Okanagan on podium at Summer Games equestrian competitions

by Dusty Yurkin:

It was a delightful and accomplished moment in equestrian competition Saturday, as Tristiana Allwood of 100 Mile House, Kelowna’s Melissa Ramsay (both with Thompson-Okanagan – Zone 2) and Kim Scott of Victoria (Vancouver Island-Central Coast – Zone 6) stood on the podium to receive their medals for Para-Dressage.

Ramsay and Scott have both come away from the second day of the BC Summer Games with two medals proudly displayed around their necks.

Ramsay is 27 years old and has been riding for five years. She felt she did “really good” when she got off the course, and her instincts were correct. She received her second silver medal of these Games.

“She’s fabulous,” said her coach. “She has been impressing me a lot this trip.”

Scott, the bronze medallist, is 17 years old and has been riding for six years, since she first started at a therapy centre. Scott can’t participate in running and walking sports due to her disability, so riding is a special experience for her and she values the connection between herself and the horse.

“The horse does it for me,” Scott said. “It’s really [a form] of freedom.”

Concerning her performance, Scott said it was “not as well as I usually do. I’m very pleased with what I got [though].”

And, she should be pleased. She has two bronze medals so far this weekend, and she has another event to compete in on Sunday.
