Jarred McMeekin’s double silver performance highlighted the Prince Rupert performances at the BC Summer Games, held in late July in Abbotsford.

McMeekin took second-place in boys’ 100m breaststroke and 200m breaststroke at the games, and also grabbed eighth place in 400 IM, while his teammates from Zone 7 also had terrific showings.

Isaac Mastroianni grabbed 17th in boys’ 1500m freestyle, 20th in 400m freestyle and 21st in 400 IM, while Hannah Toye took her own top-30 finish with a 29th-placed finish in girls’ 400 IM and 37th in 400 freestyle.

In triathlon, Kobi Franes grabbed 19th in boys’ duathlon, 16th in aquathlon and 18th in F1 triathlon. Zach Dolan took 12th in boys’ aquathlon, 20th in duathlon and 21st in F1 triathlon.

The Zone 7 relay teams nabbed ninth in boys’ 4x50m free relay, 11th in boys’ 4x50m medley relay and 12th in girls’ 4x50m relay.

Three Rupertites showed very well in athletics also, with Eric Lees grabbing personal bests in long jump and 100m. He took fourth-place and 10th, respectively. Lees was in a podium position right up until the last two rounds of jumpers who beat his score in long jump (5.55m), pushing the Rupert athlete to fourth. Lees also competed in high jump, before hurting his knee and being forced to withdraw. He scored a 1.6m jump, which placed him in 12th. A mere 0.05m more gave competitors the fourth-placed rank in the contest.

Kohen Chan and Andrew Lowther both had personal bests as well. Chan grabbed ninth in 200m, narrowly missing a spot in the finals and took 12th in 100m. Lowther placed 11th in the 100m and 200m hurdles.

With Lees out, Chan and Lowther both raced in the 4x100m relay and they grabbed seventh for Zone 7.

“Coach Megan Reid, from Terrace, was very impressed with the boys over the five days,” said Rupert track head coach Dighton Haynes.

In the team events, Zone 7 finished in sixth in boys’ softball, seventh in boys’ and girls’ soccer, eighth in girls’ rugby and 15th in girls’ beach volleyball.

McMeekin’s two silvers provided Zone 7 with 40 per cent of its medal count, as the team took one gold, three silver and one bronze overall, coming in eighth place out of eight zones. Vancouver Island-Central Coast won the games with 175 medals.
