Dr. Lee’s Dental ended their pennant-winning regular season by grounding Wrap Zone 4-1 Tuesday night at Marshall Field #3.
Missing their top three scorers for the year and down one player, the Floss crew opened the scoring in the North Okanagan Women’s Soccer Association Division 1 tilt when Jacquie Hansen tipped in a cross from Lori Shippy 30 minutes in. Shortly after, Hansen connected again on a great cross from Kim Teichman.
In the second half, Stephanie Wilson and Jenessa Moore moved the ball up to Shippy, who deflected a shot from 15 yards out that fooled the Wrap Zone keeper.
Wrap Zone replied to make it 3-1, but Teichman, who missed a breakaway two minutes earlier, took a pass from Wilson and buried one from 10 yards.
Irene Arrotta, Loren Brunelle and Cindy Worth played excellent defensively, and Jill Rintoul overlapped with the forwards to keep Wrap Zone hemmed in their end. Lisa Arrotta earned win.
Little Tex Outlaws and North Enderby Timber Celtics ran to a 1-1 draw at Marshall #2.
NET went ahead midway through the second half on a penalty shot, converted by veteran Shannon Nolting.
“This was our best season to date,” said Celtics’ coach Graham Ross. “We have been improving over the last few years, but it all showed this year recording the second most wins in the league and the least goals against.”
Stacey Cover, named Little Tex Lady of the Match, supplied her team’s offence after a nifty give-and-go with Maria Thorlakson. Cover wheeled up field and beat the Celtics’ lone defender and put a beautiful shot over the keeper’s head.
The Outlaws, missing many key members, had players line up in different positions. Cover filled in admirably as sweeper, and kept the Celtics’ scoring chances to a minimum. Katlyn Dyck was outstanding in the middle, orchestrating multiple attacks while halting NET’s progress.
Midfielders Christine Fraser, Anita Rae and Thorlakson showed plenty of hustle, and both (Lean) Lena Dean and Brianna Ostafie delivered a barrage of tricky crosses.
Brittany Davison and Rae shared keeper duties.
“It was a true team effort,” said Cover. “Outlaws can be proud of a game well played. We may have missed second place by tying this game, but we can walk off the field knowing we left it all on the field.”
Ali Clarke had the lone goal as the AF Bazers closed out the season with a 5-1 loss to Glenn Power of Salmon Arm.
Clarke’s goal put her one ahead of teammate Hailey Woon for the team scoring lead at 13.
Blazers’ MVP Amber Maltman was an all-star on defence.
In Masters Division play Tuesday night, Season’s Sistas and Rosters settled for a 4-4 tie at Marshall #4.
Diane Neudorf and Kim Sylvester powered the Sistas with a pair of goals each. Suzyn August was steady in net, making Rosters work hard for their goals.
Goplen’s Drillers finished the season in style, grounding Shuswap Kaos 3-2 in a hard-fought, physical game.
Playing with only one sub, Goplen used smart passing and communication to survive the heat. Their first goal came when halfback Jodi Peshko sent a through ball to Nancy Nickoli, who dribbled around a charging Kaos keeper for an empty-netter.
The Kaos replied in the second half, but a short time later, halfback Michelle Loxam put a pass back to defender Barb Levesque, who hammered a shot from the 18, and Melissa Hensen was there to deposit the rebound.
Minutes later, Kaos equalized again on a high, sharp shot that keeper Shawn Nickoli was unable to punch over the bar.
Loxam supplied the winner on a tremendous solo effot, beating several Kaos defenders before slotting a low shot to the corner.
Injured player-turned-coach Tracey Hill was very verbal on the sidelines. Defenders Levesque, Stephanie Curtis, Karen Zupp, Krista MacCagno and Christine Castrucow were solid the whole 90 minutes. Halfbacks Karinda McGaw, Aggie Golosinki, Loxam and Peshko played excellent two-way games, and forwards Nancy Nickoli and Hensen made great runs up front. Shawn Nickoli was aggressive in net.
The Chick Kickers ended their year with a 6-3 doubling of shorthanded Salmon Arm Setters Pub.
Michelle Johnson was on fire as she collected four goals, while nimble-footed Jenny Garland added two beauties.
Kelly Chalen and Tania Sladen were tireless at outside midfield, creating many great plays. Central midfielders Crystal Bergman and Elisha Kittson seemed to be everywhere at once, and Robyn Sherwood, Shauna Duncan-Stenquist, Marilyn Vanderdeen, Thatyana Chay and Wendy Magnus helped repel the Setters’ attack.
Injured keeper Bonnie Mann gritted through for the win.
