Duncan’s Callum Davison shot an event record 12 under par over three rounds to win a pair of titles at the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour National Championship in Phoenix, Arizona last month.
The 16-year-old Davison shot 66-69-66 (201) to win the men’s overall and juvenile division championships as many of Canada’s top young golfers teed off at The Legacy Golf Resort on Nov. 11-13.
Davison had the best result on the first day, finishing five strokes ahead of four golfers who tied with 71. He finished in a three-way tie for second on the second day, one stroke back of the leader, then dominated again on the third day, two strokes better than anyone else.
“The MJT provides me with a place to compete against some of the best golfers in Canada,” said Davison, who earned American Junior Golf Association Performance Based Entry status.
Davison had a particularly memorable moment when he hit with his three wood while on his knees under a tree, and got the result he was looking for.
“I have never tried that shot in competition before but have practiced it with my driver on the range,” Davison said.
Finishing second to Davison in the juvenile division was Eric Byun of Richmond Hill, Ont. (71-68-70). In third place was Jordan Bean of Canmore, Alta. (71-69-70).
Forward Max Domi from the Arizona Coyotes and MJT graduate Adam Cornelson, now on the Web.com tour, were on hand to present the awards at the end of the bust weekend. Several college coaches were also in attendance.
The win in Phoenix marked the end of an impressive season for Davison, who also tied for third at the Canadian Junior Boys Championship in Newfoundland in early August, shooting 74-67-72-76 to finish four strokes back of top spot. His round of 67 was the second-best shot by anyone in the field over the competition.
Mill Bay’s Tristan Mandur also competed at the Canadian Junior Boys Championship, and tied for 17th in the field of more than 150 golfers from across the country, shooting 77-77-73-68 to finish 10 strokes back.
