The Eaglecrest Ladies Golf Club is enjoying a busy season that has included two trophy competitions so far—the Marl Cup / Anne Sharpe Trophy in May and The Lorraine Riva Memorial Trophy in June-July.
All the trophies are named after former players — Marlene McDonald and Anne Sharpe, who donated the respective cups, and Lorraine Riva, whose family once owned the Eaglecrest Golf Club.
The low-net Marl Cup competition, open to players 69 and younger, was fought over two successive Tuesdays. Lois Kaye was the overall winner with a total net score of 147. Second was Soon Kim at 149, and third Kathy Hiebert at 156.
The Anne Sharpe competition, for players 70 and better, drew a field of 18 players. Georgie Higgins led both days of play and won with a net total of 159. She was followed by Sandy Plumb at 162 and Margaret Waterhouse at 164.
The Lorraine Riva Trophy is an eclectic team competition held over two days, where only the lower of the two scores on each hole counts. The winner’s score in all three handicap divisions was net 66. Division One was won by Lois Kaye, followed by 2016 champion Jacque Bater at 67. Division Two went to Elly Smith, with Irene Creally runner-up at 67. Division Three, for the second year in a row, was won by Lori Roche, followed by Lesley Randle with net 70.
The Club’s match play competition is now well under way for either the Croquet Cup (donated in 1973 by the Vancouver Island Croquet Club) for players with a handicap of 23 and higher, or the Aggie Cup (donated in 1999 by Agnes McColm) for lower-handicap participants.
Highlights still to come are the annual Battle of the Sexes in early August, and the Club Championship.
