The Langley Rivermen blew a pair of leads, settling for a single point in their season opener.
The Rivermen were up 3-0 early in the second period and 4-3 midway through the third before falling 5-4 in overtime to the Surrey Eagles.
The two junior A rivals kicked off the BCHL regular season on Friday at South Surrey Arena.
And Langley had a great start, getting goals from Trevor St. Jean and Brendan Budy put the visitors up a pair after 20 minutes. Eric Butte extended the lead to 3-0 4:04 into the middle stanza before the Eagles struck for three goals in 4:22 to close the period.
Domenic Masellis, Desi Burgart and John Wesley had the Surrey goals with the first and third coming on the man advantage.
Budy and Wesgert each tallied their second goals of the game in the third before Ryan Bruschett beat Rivermen goaltender Braedon Fleming for the OT winner with an unassisted marker 1:41 into the extra frame.
Fleming finished with 23 saves.
Jayden Lee and Trevor Ayre each had two helpers for Langley while Budy — the team’s new captain — added an assist for a three-point game.
The Rivermen will look for their first win of the season this weekend as they play a home-and-home series with the Chilliwack Chiefs. The teams play Friday in Chilliwack and then at the George Preston Recreation Centre on Saturday at 7 p.m.
