Eagles play for championship

Team drops a pair of tightly contested games to the Outlaws of Port Coquitlam

The Ridge Meadows Eagles played off for the championship of the Lower Mainland Senior Slow Pitch League last week at Pitt Meadows Athletic Field.

The team played two close games in a best-of-three series against the Wilson Centre Outlaws out of Port Coquitlam. The first seven-inning match was a 4-2 loss, and in the second game the Outlaws took the cup 4-3 in extra innings.

“The second game was a tight, defensive game,” said player/coach Bruno Tommasini. “We had the bases loaded with none out, but couldn’t score – both teams had that happen.”

In the extra innings rules, the team at-bat starts the inning with a runner on second and one out. The Outlaws advanced their runner to third with a ball in play that resulted in their second out, then scored the runner with a series-winning base hit.

Tommasini said the Eagles had a great season in the league, which is for men 55 and over, and women 50-plus. They finished their regular season schedule with a record of 11-2, then won a tough semi-final game 6-5 over the Coquitlam Swatt (Seniors with attitude) team out of Dogwood Senior Centre.
