The BCGA Zone 1 East Kootenay competitive golf season got off to a great start this past weekend with the amateur qualification tournament for the four-man team to represent the area at the BCGA Provincial Championship.
The first round of qualifiers was held at the Kimberley Golf Club on Saturday, May 27. The scoring was very good with Russell du Toit leading the field with a 69.
The second round was held at Trickle Creek Golf Resort on Sunday, May 28. While it was a more difficult day for the field, du Toit still prevailed as the lowest scorer, followed by Owen Perrin (from Trickle Creek), Scott Merriam (from the Cranbrook Golf Club) and Peter Rosendahl (from the Fernie Golf Club).
These four will be the team representatives at the Provincial competition which will be held at Morgan Creek Golf Club in Surrey from July 18 to 21.
According to BCGA Zone 1 East director John Ough, both golf courses were great hosts for the event with help from Simon Jones of the Kimberley Golf Club and Glenn Hauptman from Trickle Creek Resort.
Ough also wanted to extend a special thanks to the Kimberley Golf Club for stepping up when a scheduling problem arose and also Leonard Wellings for his help with the event on Sunday.
“[The] great weather for golf certainly led to a super weekend for all,” Ough said.
The junior golf season also started recently at Copper Point Golf Club in Invermere.
On May 14, the club hosted the first of four East Kootenay tournaments for the season. Despite the very cold wind, the players stuck it out and finished with hot chocolate in the club house.
The next event was held at Kimberley Golf Club on Sunday, May 28 with much better weather and a larger turnout.
The next event will be held at the Cranbrook Golf Club on Saturday, June 3. The last event will then be on June 25 hosted by the Fernie Golf Club.
The first three tournaments will decide the Boys team for the Provincial Championship at the Squamish Valley Golf Club from July 4 to 7.
The Senior Men’s team will be selected in conjunction with the East Kootenay Senior Invitational at Fairmont Golf Club from June 11 to 12 . Close to 100 players are expected to participate and the Provincial tournament will be hosted at the Myrtle Point Golf Club in Powell River from July 25 to 27.
