The East Kootenay Volleyball Club U16 boys were very successful this past weekend in Edmonton, winning gold in Division Two at the 2017 16U Alberta Provincial tournament.
Competing against 10 other teams from across the region, the EKVC boys defeated the Rhinos Volleyball Club out of Cold Lake in the quarterfinals (25-21, 23-25,15-8), Edmonton’s FOG Red in the semifinals (25-18, 25-12), and then finally beat the Plamondon Volleyball Club (25-14, 25-21) in the championship game.
According to head coach Troy McFadzen, it was a full team effort that led to the team’s gold medal performance.
“We played exceptional defense in the playoffs, which provided the energy needed to win,” McFadzen said. “There were highs and lows throughout the weekend with the team playing it’s best ‘team’ focused volleyball in the playoffs.”
For their outstanding play, EKVC players Sebastion Butler and Jordan Simpson were named to the tournament’s six-man All-Star team.
With the victory, the Avalanche have advanced to the 16U National West tournament which will be held from May 19 to 22 at the Olympic Oval in Calgary.
