Elk River Canadians, based in Barriere, held two driving clinics in May and July of this year.

Clinic participants were given lessons on the basics and fine points of carriage driving from Elisa Marocchi, who is a certified driving instructor from 100 Mile House.

The clinics were sold out again this year, and Barriere locals such as Barry and Bev Henry, Jacqui Nicholson, Marion Velestuk, Jackie Reedy, Walt McKirdy, Mike and Ginger Chappell attended;  as well as Armstrong residents Deb Harper and Heather Dolemo.

At the end of the two clinics, the Chappells were able to hitch and drive their new Fjord horse, Arya, for the first time.

An additional advanced clinic was intended for this September, but our Canadian Horse, Gamine, was asked to join the Canadian Horse team for the TELUS Battle of the Breeds at Spruce Meadows, Alberta, this year, so we’ve been busy in preparation.

Susan and Richard Arthur will continue to host Elisa’s clinics next year.

If you’ve ever had an interest in driving competitions and the whole process of getting to one, please contact richardarthur@xplornet.ca and we’ll keep you in the loop for next spring’s clinic.
