Will Calverley put plenty of points on the board for his NCAA men’s hockey team this season, but it was his two-way game that impressed the most.
The third-year forward at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), and a former Chilliwack Chiefs captain, was just named the Best Defensive Forward in the west pod of the Atlantic Hockey Association (AHA).
He was also recognized as the west pod’s Co-Player of the Year after earning first-team All-Conference honours last week.
The AHA is a Div 1 conference with 11 teams that were split into east and west pods for the COVID disrupted campaign.
Calverley helped the RIT Tigers to a 9-9-2 record (7-5-1 within the conference) during the shortened 2020-21 season, good enough for the third seed in the west pod for the Atlantic Hockey Tournament. His team fell at second-seeded Canisius in the quarterfinal round.
Calverley, who led Chilliwack to an RBC Cup national championship in 2018, finished the NCAA season with 12 goals and 25 points in 18 games. The 22-year-old ranked third in the nation with 1.50 points per game and twice during the season was named the Atlantic Hockey Player of the Week.
The Ontario product was the Atlantic Hockey Player of the Month in December.
