Josh Monk is a national champion.
The former West Kelowna Warriors defenseman and his Providence College Friars knocked off the Boston University Terriers—and top prospect Jack Eichel—4-3 in the NCAA Frozen Four championship game on Saturday at TD Boston Garden.
Monk, who played for three other BCHL teams before finishing his career with 71 games in a Warriors uniform, was held pointless in the final.
Monk, a 23-year-old Surrey native, played for the Warriors for two seasons beginning in 2011.
This was his second season in the NCAA at Providence.
The story of the game was goaltending, as Friars’ netminder Jon Gillies made 49 saves, including six on Eichel.
In the Boston University net however, Matt O’Connor’s mishandling of the puck on a third period dump in, tied the score, and allowed the Friars to score the winning goal a minute later.
Former Surrey Eagles player Brandon Tanev scored the winning goal for Providence.
