Excelsior under-18 girls side captures SX Cup

Pinnacles FC Excelsior under-18 girls win SX Cup Metro tournament

The Pinnacles FC Excelsior under-18 team captured the SX Cup in Surrey over the Labour Day weekend with the help of an early key victory.

PFC Excelsior defeated the Delta Selects 4-0 in their first game. Some of the players on the mixed 2000 and 2001 born squad have faced Delta since they were in under-13 and could never beat them until now. Delta is a Metro team, an A level team which is higher than the B level teams plays.

“Just from that game, I think the confidence was right from game one,” said PFC coach Derrick Webb. “The girls were just full of confidence.”

The Pinnacles FC side defeated Vancouver FC Metro in penalty kicks after the game finished 1-1 in regulation. Britney Young scored for PFC after teammate Allyn Deakin was taken down in the box area.

PFC also managed to win the game with half of its roster playing an extra game, as a PFC under-16/17 team was short of players due to injury. Webb’s co-coach Ezra Cremers decided to split part of the 2001 players to help out the other team.

The under-18 side got into the playoff round with a win and two ties, but had a better goal differential. In their four games, PFC allowed just three goals. Webb said keeper Renee Chernoff was very strong in goal, with the help of her backline.

“I told her before the penalty shootout, no pressure on you, you are good for at least one save,” joked Webb. “Our keepers are schooled very well in shot stopping from in close.”

Heading into Surrey, Webb knew his team could compete with the other teams in the tournament.
