A popular Father’s Day tradition in British Columbia is returning for the 18th year this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

The Family Fishing Weekend is a way for families to spend quality time together while enjoying a popular outdoor pastime. And, with the fishing licence requirement waived for the weekend, families get a break on the cost as well.

Free events held throughout the weekend offer fishing activities for everyone ranging from those new to fishing, to families who would like a fishing basics refresher to people simply interested in joining a fun group activity.

Family Fishing Weekend events have been planned at Champion Lakes Provincial Park where BC Parks and RAP Park Contracting host anglers from 1-4 p.m. at Third Champion Lake.

Attendees learn about fishing gear, share freshwater and saltwater fishing tips, learn about environmental stewardship and the tradition of recreational fishing. These hands-on events are designed so everyone from beginner to expert has an opportunity to catch a fish. Loaner rods, reels and tackle are provided for those who do not have their own gear.

“For many BC families, Family Fishing Weekend marks the unofficial start of summer,” says Family Fishing Society of BC President Wayne Saito. “A free weekend of fishing is a great way to encourage families to get outdoors and enjoy sport fishing across B.C.”

Events are supported by the Family Fishing Society and organized by Fish and Game clubs, the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC, The Province, the Conservation Officer Service, municipalities, community groups, and local businesses.

“We hold Family Fishing Weekend during Father’s Day weekend to offer kids, friends and families an activity they can enjoy together,” says Provincial Coordinator of the Family Fishing Society of BC, Owen Bird. “While some come to learn about fish and fishing, we also see many knowledgeable anglers who come to teach and share what they love about fishing. It’s great to see the passion for the sport being shared with the next generation.”

Activities are also planned for Nakusp Arrow Lakes on Saturday, Williamson Lake in Revelstoke on Sunday, and at Cottonwood Lake in Nelson on Saturday and Sunday.

A complete list of participating communities, locations, and event descriptions, along with step-by-step fishing instructions, can be found at www.bcfamilyfishing.com. Freshwater and tidal fishing regulations, including daily catch limits, always apply; details are posted at www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca or www.fishing.gov.bc.ca.

The Family Fishing Society of BC was established in 2001 to encourage new anglers as well as promote and coordinate Family Fishing Weekend and other angling initiatives targeted toward families and young people.
