Family Fun Day this Sunday at Bull Mountain

If you’ve never tried cross country skiing before, there’s no better time than this Sunday, Jan. 8 at Bull Mountain Ski Area.

If you’ve never tried cross country skiing before, there’s no better time than this Sunday, Jan. 8 at Bull Mountain Ski Area when the Williams Lake Cross Country Ski Club hosts its annual Family Fun Day.

“Skiing is free on the day and we will have equipment available to borrow,” said WLCCSC executive member Kirsty Gartshore.

“Volunteers will be there to get people taking their first steps on skis, or to get them to the next level if they have done it before.”

The staff at Caribou Ski Source for Sports will be volunteering their time and their equipment for the event, which will run from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., while equipment will be available from noon until 2:30 p.m.

Gartshore said given the amount of snow so far this season, the conditions are phenomenal.

“Our volunteer groomers are working hard to track what little snow we have and our members are sure appreciating it,” she said. “There were 20 cars in the parking lot at 9 a.m. (on Dec. 30).”

The WLCCSC posts regular snow condition updates on its website at http://wlccsc.blogspot.ca.

They recommend anyone interested in cross country skiing to come visit the facility for Family Fun Day.

On another note, the WLCCSC is looking for information about an individual who drove an ATV on its groomed runs recently.

“(It) created huge ruts in our trails,” Gartshore said. “This creates a real safety hazard for our skiers who are skiing along and not expecting to have to swerve to avoid obstacles.

“It was a great deal of work for our volunteer groomers to make the trails safe again. I just want to remind everyone that in winter it is important that only the groomer and skiers are allowed on the groomed ski trails.”
