It’s almost that time of year again, when summer sports are traded in for skis and snowboards, and according to Fernie Alpine Resort’s (FAR) marketing manager, Karen Pepper, this season will be one to remember.

“We’re keeping our fingers crossed for Mother Nature to bring us a great winter with lots of snow! Our Winter Opening Day is set for Friday, December 2nd – conditions permitting,” she said to The Free Press. “The fall season is super busy with crews working on various projects to get ready for the winter season – examples include upgrades to the snowmaking system, moving the Mini Moose carpet and also making changes to the grade of the Moose slope to make it more beginner friendly, and full maintenance schedule on all of our lifts.”

FAR is planning an event-packed winter with the return of classic events and some potential new crowd pleasers.

“We have a busy schedule of events this winter.  A few highlights include our Holiday Activity Schedule – Skiing & Photos with Santa, New Year’s Eve Family Event & Fireworks, the Kinky Rail Jam, Avalanche Awareness Days, the Jeep Junior Freeski Competition, Griz Days Dummy Downhill, Powder Pedal Paddle Relay Race, Slope Soaker and Fernival,” said Pepper. “We do have an exciting new offering this year – Guided Uptracking Tours. ‘uptracking’, or climbing up a mountain in skis or on a snowboard, is gaining in popularity and Fernie Alpine Resort is now offering guided uptracking tours for this coming winter season. Uptracking is, in its own way, an art form and sometimes described as a zen exercise for true lovers of winter sports.”

Discounted season passes will be available up to Oct. 15. Passes can be purchased through Skifernie.com or Skircr.com.

The Winter Job Fair is fast approaching. Group interviews will be held on Oct. 21 and 22 and need to be pre-booked. Individuals interested in working at the resort are encouraged to send their resume and cover letter to Employment@skifernie.com.

“The Job Fair is great for anyone who is interested in working at Fernie Alpine Resort!  We hire for personality, specifically looking for people who are passionate about snow and ensuring that our guests have the best experience possible while at the resort.

“We hire for a variety of departments including Guest Services, Ticket Office, Winter Sports School Sales, Retail, Rental & Repair Shop, Food and Beverage – servers, hosts, cashiers, cooks, hotel staff – front desk, housekeeping, Lifts and Ticket Checking to name a few,” said Pepper.
