Local skaters performed well on home ice as the Kelowna Skating Club and Centre of Excellence hosted the 2013 BC/YT Super Series STARSkate Final last weekend at CNC.
The event serves as the B.C. and Yukon provincial championships for development level events, showcasing the top younger skaters from B.C.
Several of the top skaters were from Kelowna.
In the Juvenile Women Under 11 category, nine-year-old Olivia Gran of Kelowna skated a clean and inspired performance to capture the provincial championship. Her personal best score of 34.66 points also helped her secure the Super Series overall title, based on scores posted throughout the season.
In the Under 14 division, Kelowna’s Rochelle Reeve, Kristen Ciurka, and Madison Delcourt finished 7th, 9th, and 10th, respectively.
The host Kelowna club would see its second provincial champion crowned at the Star 4 Girls Under 10 category, as Maya Rose made no mistake in taking the gold medal and overall Super Series title with a personal best 20.69 points.
Kelowna’s Mikayla Consiglio also took a podium spot in winning the bronze medal, while Alexis Garost, Summer Peitsch, and Kenedi Woodcox finished 5th, 12th, and 18th, respectively.
At the Under 13 division of Star 4 Girls, Kaiya MacLeod captured the bronze medal, while Sally Haaheim and Makenna Jensen finished 8th and 21st, respectively.
In a tough field of 25 skaters, Kelowna’s Ashley Sales skated to a bronze medal finish in the Pre-Juvenile Women Under 11 division. Her club mates Daria Carr and Alyssa Dobbs skated to 10th and 13th place finishes.
Carter Hiob won the third title for Kelowna in the Star 4 Boys division, as well as the overall Super Series Championship. Ryder MacLeod, also from Kelowna, was close behind with the silver medal.
The medal count continued as Abbey Reiter posted a personal best score of 26.84 points, en route to a silver medal in the Senior Bronze Women’s event. Savana Sheardown and Gabrielle Balcaen finished in 6th and 10th, respectively.
Rachel Hiob finished just off the podium in 4th at the Senior Silver level, while Taylor Sheardown finished 7th at the Junior Silver division.
This event represents the end of the season for the Kelowna club.
“It was a great way to end the year for us,” said KSC Director Jason Mongrain. “It’s re-affirming to see the hard work of our skaters and coaches paying off at the biggest event of the season for these levels.”
