Final four determined in women’s football

The first round of the Cowichan Women’s Football League playoffs went into the books last Sunday, setting up the semifinals on Wednesday night.

The Ravens had sealed up the league title on the previous Wednesday and earned a bye through the first round. The Law and Wild squared off on Sunday for the chance to face the Ravens in the semis, with the Law advancing thanks to a 31-12 victory.

Rachel Hastings, Kim Scafe, Jaimie Olson and Leanne Closson scored touchdowns for the Law, with Tanya Green adding a convert. Closson also had two interceptions, while Crystal Gotto had two sacks and Hastings added one.

Marika Masters scored both touchdowns for the Wild and chipped in on defence with an interception. Rhiannon Kemmler had two picks and Teresa Melchior had a pair of sacks.

The Sirens put up a good fight in their battle against the secondplace Crew, but when it was all over, the Crew prevailed 53-13.

Nicole Pugh had an outstanding outing for the Crew with four touchdowns – including a pick-six – three sacks, one single-point convert and one two-point convert. Marilou Sullivan had two touchdowns and a convert, and Jessica Lines-Wikkerink, Kerynne Bain and Alita Mattin also had majors, while Lenneke Vinoly recorded two sacks.

Hailea Hatcher had a touchdown and a convert for the Sirens, with Christine Cronin-Switzer putting up the other score.

Rounding out the semifinalists are the Blue Steel Brew, who beat the Storm 31-6. Heidi Haslam scored three touchdowns and one convert for BSB, with single scores from Mila Main and Sam Miiller. Aldea

Alex Roberts scored the Storm’s only touchdown, while Rachel Pugh had four sacks and Elia Zanon had an interception.

The regular season wrapped up during the previous week. The Ravens locked up first place in the league on Wednesday with a 39-12 victory over the Sirens. Rikki Wylie had two touchdowns and an interception, Dana Thorne had a touchdown, a sack and a convert, Veronica Smith had a touchdown, an interception and a convert, Emily Salmon and Jamie Russell each scored once, and Morgan Rogers added a convert. The Sirens got a touchdown and an interception from Shelly McKay.

Friday’s games ended up having no impact on the standings, but the Sirens were afforded the opportunity for the second win of the season, and their second win in less than a week as they beat the Wild 31-13. Deanne Mearns scored three touchdowns, Carmen Zimmer had two, Hatcher had an interception and a convert, and Cronin-Switzer also had a pick. Dieneke Pedersen had two touchdowns and two picks for the Wild, and Melchior added four sacks.

In the other Friday night game, the Law shut out the Storm 25-0. For the Law, Olson had two touchdowns and an interception, Closson had a touchdown and a convert, Hastings had a touchdown and a sack, and Gotto also recorded a sack.

The Storm got four sacks from Rachel Pugh, two interceptions from Caitlin Evans and one pick from Carly Boyd.
