Taking advantage of superb riding conditions, 16-year-old Quin Finocchio claimed first place in the Junior 2 division at the Prince Edward County Gravity Fest in Picton, Ont.
Finocchio, a Vernon Secondary student, positioned himself well for the elimination heats of the downhill skateboard event by putting up the fastest time in his two qualifying runs in a pool of 16 juniors. He stayed on form by winning every knockout heat on the way to capturing his first International Gravity Sports Association (IGSA) race of the season.
The win, combined with points earned at three earlier North America IGSA races, means Finocchio, is ranked in the top five of the junior 2 category (14-17 years). Vernon’s Brendan Davidson is also in the top five.
The U.S. championships (Oct. 8-9) will be the final stop on the NorAm IGSA calendar.
Finocchio also competed in a field of 51 in the men’s open division in Picton, which was won by Vancouver’s Patrick Switzer. He was eliminated in the quarterfinals, but rebounded to win every heat in the consolation bracket to capture ninth place, his best Open result of the season.
