Maple Ridge’s Alex Rowley scored his first goal for the Simon Fraser University men’s soccer team as the Clan trounced the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack 6-0 in their 2012 home opener at Terry Fox Field, Friday night.

The SFU freshman and Samuel Robertson Technical Secondary School graduate fired six shots in his first game with the NCAA Division 2 team, three of them on net. Rowley is a product of the Vancouver Whitecaps FC U-18 residency program, which is based at SFU, and competed for the B.C. U-16 team.

However, the man of the match was Carlo Basso of Coquitlam, who came close to setting a school record with five goals, four of which came in a 27-minute span in the first half.

“It was a great start to the season after a pre-season where at times, we didn’t play our best,” said SFU head coach Alan Koch.
