The Vancouver Island First Nations Snowboard Team has finished up their seventh season slicing up the hills of Mount Washington and is now starting to fundraise for next season.

On Saturday, May 11 the team’s fundraiser will be held at 6 p.m. in the Comox Bighouse and Band Hall. It will include entertainment by the Kumugwe Dance Group interspersed with 50/50 draw and a toonie draw. Coffee, tea and dessert will follow.

Contact Lee Everson at 250-702-6740 for information about fundraiser tickets.

The Vancouver Island First Nations Snowboard Team program provides aboriginal youth between the ages of nine and 19 with the opportunity to learn and develop their snowboarding skills. Coaching, instruction, equipment and Mount Washington lift passes are provided to the participants.

“The recreation program is provided free to the team members,” says Kim Leming, Vancouver Island manager. “In exchange, these aboriginal youth are expected to be in good standing in school and their community, be drug and alcohol free, and be willing to commit and participate as a member for the season.”

Past snowboard team participants have come from the Comox Valley and Campbell River areas. Mount Washington staff and many volunteers have made it possible for the program to succeed during the last seven years.

“Over the past few seasons youth mentors attended coaching clinics as well to become level one snowboard instructors.  The youth returned to instruct and mentor this year’s team,” adds Leming. “I’m very proud of these youth, and that our athletes today are the leaders of tomorrow!”
