Fresh off being named the BC Junior A Lacrosse League first star of the week, Ryan Martel struck for five goals in his team’s 12-5 victory over the Delta Islanders.
Martel fired 20 shots, connecting on a quarter of them as the Thunder junior A lacrosse team won for the third time in four games.
The most recent victory was Thursday (June 1) at the Langley Events Centre and helped the Thunder complete a home-and-home sweep over the Islanders.
Martel had earned first star honours from the league after scoring six goals and adding five assists in his team’s two games the week before. He is tied for the league lead with 21 goals and fourth in points with 39.
Against Delta he had a goal in each of the first two periods before adding three more in the third period.
The Thunder actually trailed 5-3 in the second period before closing on a 4-0 run to take a 7-5 lead into the locker room. Langley scored the only five goals of the final period.
Mackenzie Rope also had a big game with two goals and four helpers while Mitch McDole had a goal and three assists. Bobby Kidd III (two goals), Trevor Chernoff (one goal, one assist) and Anthony Kalinch (one goal) rounded out the scoring.
And while Martel had 20 shots on goal alone, the Islanders as a team combined for just 28.
Jake Sundar stopped all 13 shots he faced after Torin Vanrheenan surrendered five goals on 15 shots.
Up next for the team is a road game on June 2 against the first-place Coquitlam Junior Adanacs, who sit at 9-1. The team’s lone loss was to Langley on May 10.
