Fish and game club crowns new sharpshooting champions

Courtenay and District Fish and Game Association held its annual Club Championships at its shotgun venue on March 20.

The high overall winner was club president Dale Frame. Other winners included Kelly Lance (high 5 Stand), Peter Ronning (high Skeet), Dale Frame (high Trap and High Overall), Grace Evans (Ladies high Skeet), Jenna Leggett (Ladies 5 Stand and high Overall), Shirl Leggett (Ladies high Trap).

A great variety of participation prizes were donated or subsidized by local merchants, most notably Gone Fishin’, Courtenay Pharmacy, Wholesale Sports Nanaimo, Reliable Gun Vancouver, Reid’s Automotive and member Rai Pussinen.

Longtime member Irene Harley once again donated a Russell knife as the top attendance prize, won by Shirl Leggett, and Buck Harley donated the annual trophies.

The club has been building its youth and ladies shooting program over the last few years, and was very pleased that this was the first year that it has been able to offer Ladies’ trophies.  The High Overall in the Ladies’ class, Jenna Leggett, age 14, is a member of the club’s youth program.

Again club volunteerism played a major role in the event.  A celebratory potluck banquet was organized and served by efficient kitchen ladies, Carol Curry, Sandra Brown, and Nancy Raines, and the ground crew of referees, recorders, and machine loaders, organized by Terry Kerton kept the squads moving.

Information on upcoming programs can be found on the club website or at the regularly scheduled Thursday and Sunday shoots.  New shooters are always welcomed.
