Winter has arrived in Sooke, and effort on saltwater has been down.

Harsh, cooler north easterly winds combined with rain and some snow have kept many anglers off the water.

The diehard fishers finding the odd day to get out are reporting many smaller winter spring salmon and halibut about half of the times out.

With sunshine and cooler, dryer temperatures in the forecast, many of us are optimistic that we will have some nice dry fishing days soon.

Upcoming fishing derbies include the annual Sooke Boxing day Derby – $30 per ticket, with a new higher first place prize of $2,500, and the Winter Trotac Fishing Derby with a first place prize of $3,000 on Jan. 15 – tickets $100. See your local bait and tackle provider for more details on these and other derbies.
