Weather patterns in the Sooke area have improved, with warmer temperatures and low winds providing more fishing opportunities for both local and visiting fishers.
Salmon fishing has been consistent with good catches coming in from boats trolling anchovy, herring, spoons and hootchies close to the bottom.
This can be a great time to try salmon fishing as many local charter guide boats running through the winter are offering winter rates.
Crabbing in the harbour has been good with some nice-sized male Dungeness crabs coming in on the incoming tides.
At this time of year many fishers are awaiting the announcement from Department of Fisheries and Oceans whether halibut fishing will open for Feb. 1. There has been no indication from DFO that the recreational halibut quota may change, or that it has been a concern of late.
