The Vernon Vortex Speed Skating club held the first of its Personal Best Challenge series races last week at Priest Valley Arena.

The athletes recorded a total of five personal best times which is an incredibly good start for the first races of the season.

Declan Fitzpatrick led the pack with a 3.5 second personal best time.  Other personal best times were recorded by Mattias Isobe, Tadhg Boyle, Jonah Violini and Laura Hall.

Fitzpatrick, 10, is a Grade 5 student at Beairsto Elementary.

The big challenge for the season will be defending the PB Challenge Cup in the ongoing interclub competition with the Williams Lake Speed Skating Club and the rematch of last year’s Coyote Cup in Kamloops.

Former Canadian Olympian Michael Hall is in his third season as head coach Practices goes Tuesdays 5:15-6:45 p.m. and Thursdays 7-8 p.m. at PV Arena. Skate rentals are $100 for the season.
