A pair of athletes from Seaquam Secondary combined for five medals at the Fraser Valley High School Track and Field Championships last week in Coquitlam.
Michael Milic won a pair of gold medals to go with one bronze, while Michael Aono won one race and was second in another.
Milic won the 2,000m steeplechase in 6:08.47, then was the first-place finisher in the 3,000m run in 8:51.51. He was three seconds ahead of the runner-up in both events. Milic also placed third in the men’s 1,500m race.
Aono won the men’s 100m race in 11.14 seconds, just two-hundredths of a second ahead of runner-up Amarveer Sandhu of Panorama Ridge. Aono was also the runner-up in the men’s 400m, finishing in a time of 49.7, just 17-hundredths back of winner Dean Ellenwood of Langley Secondary. At last year’s B.C. championships, Aono edged Ellenwood in the final, posting a time of 48.31 seconds.
Lord Tweedsmuir’s 4x100m relay teams both won a silver medal. The women’s team of Sarah Parker, Maryn Budiman, Ansah Odoom and Emma Jonas finished in 52.42 seconds, while the men’s team of Jonny Chwaklinski, Colton Zayshley, Kenzo Los and Joel Klassen finished in 45.20 seconds.
Seven other athletes from Surrey schools were bronze medalists.
Katarina Vlahovic of Fraser Heights placed third in both the 100m hurdles and the 200m sprint.
Meyer Quaynor of Johnston Heights Secondary was third in the 100m sprint, her time of 12.67 seconds just seventh-hundredths shy of first place.
Fleetwood Park Secondary’s Emelie Peelo won her bronze medal in the women’s 1,500m race walk.
Georgia Paterson of Lord Tweedsmuir finished the women’s long jump in third place after a leap of 5.31m, just 18cm shy of the winner.
Nia Cayenne was third in the women’s shotput, as was Liam Spangers in the men’s high jump. Both athletes are from Holy Cross Regional High School.
Tiger Wu of Pacific Academy was third in the men’s hammer throw.
