Vernon Kal Tire lost 2-1 to Enco Executive Flooring in Tree Brewing Kelowna Men’s 35+ Soccer League action Thursday night at MacDonald Park.
The Tiremen came out fast with Glenn Allan dummying a ball to a flying Tim McGowan, who finished with a fabulous low shot.
After that, Kal Tire could not find any rhythm and Enco sprung two in the next 20 minutes. Play then went back and forth with both teams getting chances.
Kal Tire was notably missing the versatile play of Tyler (Falcon) Johnson who was grounded with an injury. Both teams are 3-1 and share second place, one point behind Lake Country Tree Brewing.
Kal Tire faces the Penticton Pinnacles next Thursday at Beasley Park in Lake Country.
The Pinnacles bounced Select Your Tickets 5-1 at Kings Park, while Tree Brewing and Mission Cleaners drew 2-2 and Alves Bros. tied the Salmon Arm Beer Badgers 1-1.
In Okanagan Men’s 55+ play, Vernon Kal Tire shaded Summerland Rockets 2-1 at Beasley Park.
Uncle Dave’s Pizza Man of the Match Terry Lowe opened the Kal Tire offence on a gorgeous run and shot, short side, at 28 minutes.
Denis Chabot made it 2-0 after a nifty dummy by fellow central midfielder Jim Sparrow, who was stopped by keeper Tim Poloshko on a penalty kick, awarded when Mark deVolder was tripped up.
Defender Harry Higson wildly celebrated his first goal in years with 10 minutes remaining, his 18-yard shot deflecting in past keeper Pete (The Heat) Richter. The Tiremen are 3-0, the Rockets 0-4.
Vernon Silver Stars bowed 5-1 to West Kelowna with Keith Sheffield getting a late goal for the Stars.
In women’s division II play, the Fantastic Four got two sweet goals from Taylor Weixl in a 3-2 win over the Green Rockets at Marshall Field #5.
Brooke Hackle also tallied for Fantastic Four (1-1-1), while Suzyn August came off injury and was a trooper in net.
Newbie Leighton Smith was marvellous on the Four wing in her first soccer game ever. Terrific improvements were shown by newcomer Ruth Delisle.
Olivia Anderson hustled and played the middle like a star, while Richelle Seyguin took a rocket to the face, went to her knees, but recovered like an ace and soldiered on.
The OTC/Sunterra Sistas and Sir Winston’s Attack ran to a 1-1 draw at Marshall #4.
Sistas had lots of chances and really moved the ball well, but struggled to finish against the vastly improved Attack.
Brandi Wejr put Sir Winnie’s ahead at the half with the Sistas equalizing midway through the final 40. Defender Becky Birbilis played the ball through to Diane Neudorf, who attempted a shot that was deflected to Cara Van Tol, who found net.
Birbilis and Crystal Flasch were dynamic on the first-place Sistas’ back line, along with Jennie Currie, Amber Arnold and Michelle Mulholland. Sistas’ keeper Wendy Nadeau stopped te Attack forwards in their tracks or forced them to shoot wide most of the night.
