Minor baseball is up and running and nowhere was that more evident then up at Springwood Park on the weekend as the fields were full with a slew of games.

In action Saturday for a double header against the Nanaimo Athletics in Bantam league action, the hometown Flyers were handed their first losses of the season, dropping game one 5-0 then coming up on the short end of an entertaining 8-4 final in game two.

The Flyers went into the home stand unbeaten at 4-0 and are remain one of the front-runners in the seven-team house league made up of teams from Oceanside, Nanaimo, Chemainus and Port Alberni.

“It was a better game, Oceanside coach Jim Hykaway said after game two.

“We’ve got a couple kids new to baseball being 14 and never played before, and both of them got hits which was nice to see,” he said pointing to Grant Wheaton and Darian Budd.

Third baseman Alex Bib, pitcher Devin Svensen and catcher Austin Hykaway were part of an exciting run-down in the top of the fifth inning, when one of the Nanaimo base-runners got caught in no man’s land.

The Flyers are back home at Springwood on Wednesday against Port Alberni in a 6 p.m. start.
