Football fans who want a close-up of Bill Belichick’s famous cut-off hoodie or the stubble on Tom Brady’s chin have a great opportunity to do so this weekend.
A veritable football festival is planned for Super Bowl Sunday at City Centre Park in Langford, culminating in the big game between the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons being shown on City Centre Grille’s massive 165-inch screen, among others.
In addition to the main event, there will be a free tailgate party at the adjacent Westhills Stadium, featuring a live football game between a group of friends, an inflatable football toss, beer garden and a live band, as well as a bunch of prizes.
“They do this in the States, but they just don’t do it here,” said Gerry St. Cyr, facility operator for City Centre Park and Langford Lanes. “We’re kind of doing our first tailgate … we’ve had people requesting it … so we’re going to set it up and have a little fun with it.”
Still, the most important part for true football fans will surely be City Centre Grille’s giant projection screen, which St. Cyr said is one of the largest in Greater Victoria. “I do not know of a bigger one,” he added.
In terms of predictions, St. Cyr expects New England’s superstar quarterback Brady to hoist the Lombardi Trophy for a record fifth time. “My gut’s telling me that the Patriots are going to win by 10,” he said.
Reservations for space at the Grille are quickly filling up for game day and fans are encouraged to do so sooner rather than later, as St. Cyr is expecting a full house.
The tailgate party begins at 1 p.m., with the Super Bowl slated to kickoff in Houston at 3:30 p.m. Pacific time.
