Former Burrards star joins coaching staff

Maple Ridge Burrards all-time leading scorer Kyle Goundrey will be joining the senior men’s team’s coaching staff  for the 2011 Western Lacrosse Association as the team’s new offensive assistant coach.

Goundrey retired from WLA action with the Burrards after the 2008 season as the franchise’s all-time leading scorer since their move to Maple Ridge in 1996, with 673 points. He finished his WLA playing career with 246 goals and 427 assists and 203 penalty minutes. In 123 games in the National Lacrosse League, in Calgary, Edmonton, Baltimore and Vancouver, Kyle contributed 99 goals and 233 assists.

“Kyle’s style of play was aggressive, gritty and physical,” said coach Daren Fridge. “His willingness to compete in the tough areas of the floor was second to none.”

Goundrey will help coach an offensive attack featuring a young group of future stars in Joel Dalgarno, Jarrett Davis and 2011 NLL Rookie of the Year Curtis Dickson.

“The addition of Kyle to our coaching staff will help to maintain the hard-working and aggressive style of play that the Burrards have traditionally been known for,” said Fridge. “His knowledge, experience and high expectations will help to further our success on the floor.”

• The Burrards begin their quest for the 2011 Mann Cup this Sunday against the Langley Thunder at home at Planet Ice in Maple Ridge. Game time is 6:45 p.m.
