Former National Hockey League player and coach Ryan Walter helped kick off four weeks of West Coast Junior Prep Camp at the AV Multiplex, Tuesday.
Walter, who played and coached for 17 seasons with the Washington Capitals, Montreal Canadiens and Vancouver Canucks, delivered a motivational speech to the all-female camp participants, then led them in on-ice drills.
“These guys are better than the Canucks,” he quipped during a water break.
This is the third full year for prep camp in Port Alberni, and the first year for an all-female week, camp director Mike Coflin said. The camp continues for three more weeks.
