Fort Canoe Kayak Club goes for gold

Club sends seven to Canadian Sprint Canoe Kayak National Championships in Sherbrooke, Quebec

The Fort Canoe Kayak Club is fielding seven athletes in the Canadian Sprint Canoe Kayak National Championships, which take place in Sherbrooke, Que. later this month.

The racers from the Langley club will be competing with the best in the nation in long and short distance races, ranging from 200 metres to 6 km in both single and crew boats.

Fort Canoe Kayak Club’s youngest national team member is 16-year-old canoeist Noah Said, who is competing at his second national championship alongside his brother, Omar Said, 21, who is racing canoe for his third chance at a medal.

New to the national stage are 17-year-old Devon Holcroft, kayak and 18-year-old Liam Stewart, canoe.

The oldest members of the team are Elliot Hoyt,28, and Ben Muench, 27, who will be racing at their seventh nationals.

The final member of the team will be Fort Canoe Kayak’s head coach Connor Fehr who has qualified for his 10th national championships in canoe and will be looking for his seventh medal.

The athletes qualified earlier this summer at the Provincial Championships held in Kamloops.

The competition runs Aug. 28 through to Sept. 1 and will see more than 2,000 athletes competing for a podium spot.

Fort Canoe Kayak Club is a non-profit group of people who enjoy paddling competitively and for recreation. It offers programs for all skill levels and ages eight to 80.
