Four Maple Ridge secondary wrestlers medalled last weekend at the BC Age Class Wrestling Tournament in Kamloops.
Payten Smith continued her two-year unbeaten streak, winning all five of her matches en route to a gold medal.
At the other end of the mat, Cam Hicks suffered his first loss in over a year, and had to settle for silver.
Two Port Moody wrestlers, Ciara McCrae and Jessica Norwicky, earned silver and bronze medals respectively. They travelled with the Ridge contingent.
But overall, the team was disappointed to not have more of its wrestlers medal, with 14 others in the contingent.
“Probably one of the worst performances in the history of Ridge wrestling,” commented a coach Bill McCrae.
In other wrestling news, Payten Smith was named to the B.C. team for the Canada Summer Games held in Quebec in August.
“All of Payten’s hard work is paying off. Undefeated in over two year – no points scored upon at last year’s provincials … and not one point scored on her this year – truly an amazing athlete,” said McCrae.
