Four score and a win and a loss ago…

Big offensive outbursts both help and hinder Comox Valley Glacier Kings

Scoring four goals in one period is a good thing. Giving up four goals in one period, not so much.

That fact was reflected on the scoresheet for the Comox Valley Glacier Kings on the weekend in a 5-3 loss to the Nanaimo Buccaneers and 4-1 win over the Kerry Park Islanders in Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League action.

Friday, Nov. 11 in Courtenay the G-Kings fell behind 4-0 in the first period, while the next night in Kerry Park they scored four times in the final frame to post the win.

It was Remembrance Day on Nov. 11 and the Yetis marked the occasion by having Courtenay mayor Larry Jangula drop the ceremonial puck, the Aspen Park Elementary school choir (directed by Kevin Flesher) with Grades 3-6 sing O Canada and cadet Lewis Dawes read “In Flanders Fields.”

The Bucs came out of the gate strong, outshooting the G-Kings 20-3 in the first period en route to  a 4-0 lead. The roles were reversed in the second stanza, with the Yetis outshooting the Bucs 17-8 and cutting the lead to 4-3, only to have the visitors quash the comeback midway through the frame.

Nanaimo’s Cam Nickerson (2g, 2a) earned first star honours while G-Kings’ Jackson Gibson (2g) was second star. Nanaimo outshot Comox Valley 36-30 with newcomer Zak Myrowich taking the loss in goal.

Myrowich was added to the roster when Marcus Glaus suffered a concussion. A Glacier Kings’ spokesperson said there is no timetable for Glaus’ return.

On Nov. 12 the Islanders scored shorthanded early in the first period, and that’s the way things stood until early in the third when Caleb Doleman scored with the Icemen shorthanded.

First star Matteo Giomo tallied two goals in just under two minutes (including the winner on the power play) and Jake McKenzie’s power-play tally at 18:51 sealed the deal.

Willie Daigneault (two assists) was second star and winning goalie William Cawthorn was third star. Comox Valley out-shot Kerry Park 35-30.

The G-Kings play the Panthers Nov. 18 in Peninsula, are home Nov. 19 to Oceanside Generals and visit the Campbell River Storm on Nov. 20.

At their next few home games the Glacier Kings are donating proceeds of 50/50 sales to Santa’s Workshop, and fans are invited to drop off toys or cash donations to the workshop (who will be set up in the Comox Valley Sports Centre lobby) and have a chance to win a prize from a treasure chest.
