Fourth-place finish for Mustangs in valley

The Maggie Mustangs girls soccer team lost tough bronze medal match

A trip to the B.C. High School AA provincial championships was not meant to be for the Maggie Mustangs.

The senior girls squad lost 2-0 to Valleyview in the bronze medal match of the Okanagan Valley championship in Vernon to place fourth. Mustangs coach John Buckley said the players pushed hard late for the tying goal and gave up a late second goal near the end.

“We were the youngest team in the tournament and played really well, competing hard in all games and giving the top teams a real battle,” said Buckley. “Great work ethic, improving skill play and possession passing allowed the girls to finish in the top four teams.”

Bleranda Vrenzi led the Mustang attack with four goals being one of their top performers, along with Vanessa Edis, who was solid in the midfield. Kaylyna Rupert scored a goal and Mickayla Rogers demonstrated outstanding play as Grade nines. Buckley also praised the goalkeeping play of Megan McCafferty and Shelby Rogers. Lyndsey Selles and Emma Roos capped off their senior year with great efforts defending the backline.

The Mustangs only lose three players to graduation and Buckley believes the future is bright for the team being a contender in valley’s next year. That will also depend on returning players and new Grade nines committing.
