Fraser Valley Thunderbirds swept in BCMML final

Cariboo Cougars eliminate T-birds in two games

The Fraser Valley Thunderbirds championship dreams ended with a thud on Saturday.

Competing in the British Columbia Major Midget League‘s best-of-three- final, Fraser Valley couldn’t stop the red hot Cariboo Cougars and were swept in two games on home ice at MSA Arena.

Friday’s game one saw the Thunderbirds unable to get on the scoreboard, and fell 3-0. The Cougars scored twice in the second period, and once in the third to seal the win.

Game two on Saturday began with the Cougars opening up a 4-0 lead over the first half of the game, en route to an 8-2 win.

Fraser Valley got goals from Brendan Williamson and Graham Sward in the loss. Both of those goals came on the power play.

The loss ends the Thunderbirds season, and advances the Cougars to take on the top major midget team from Alberta later this month. The winner of that regional battle qualifies to the Telus Cup, which sees the best major midget teams from across Canada battle it out.

Despite the elimination, the Thunderbirds had an excellent season, finishing second overall in the BCMML during regular season play. The club compiled a record of 22-6-2, and finished just three points out of the first overall spot.
