Fruitvale’s Ally Schroder lifts Team BC to bronze at baseball championship

Team BC, with 14-year-old Ally Schroder, beat Nova Scotia 13-3 on Sunday to win a bronze medal at the Canadian baseball championship.

The 14-year-old J. L. Crowe student was an integral component in BC’s run to the bronze medal match where they won convincingly 13-3 over Nova Scotia on Sunday afternoon, following a close 6-5 semifinal loss that morning to Manitoba.

Team BC went 3-1in the round robin, starting out the tournament with a 13-2 drubbing of Quebec, before winning a crucial 10-9 victory over its western nemesis Alberta. Schroder earned the win in the close match coming on in the second inning to put out the fire after Alberta put up six runs against starter Jayan Nickolet in the bottom half to take a 6-5 lead.

The teams exchanged a pair of runs in the third inning. After a scoreless fourth, Schroder came up to bat in the top of five with two out and two on and singled to score two runs to give BC a 9-8 lead. She then blanked Alberta in the fifth, before moving to shortstop to start the sixth. The teams exchanged runs in the inning and finished the seventh scoreless for the 10-9 win.

Schroder went 3 1/3 ininngs giving up one hit and two earned runs while striking out five and walking one batter for the victory, while helping herself offensively going 2-for-4 at the plate with three runs batted in (RBI).

Team BC’s only setback came in an 11-5 loss to the eventual champion Ontario, and finished off the round robin with a decisive 18-5 victory over New Foundland Saturday. Schroder went 6-for-16 in the tournament for a .375 average, six RBIs, and five stolen bases.

Ontario went on to win the championship with an 11-1 victory over Manitoba in the final.

This coming week, Schroder will also be part of the Team Canada Prospects Team at the Senior Women’s Invitational in Red Deer, along with another Fruitvale native, Ella Matteucci who will be playing for the senior women’s Team BC. Other participants include the provincial senior women’s teams from Alberta, Quebec, and Ontario.
