From March 1 to 3 eleven skiers and two snowboarders from the Fernie Secondary School (FSS) Ski and Snowboard Team did extremely well at the 2017 BC Alpine High School Championships at the Whistler Blackcomb resort.
Both skiers and snowboarders raced down a Giant Slalom (GS) course and a Terrain GS. FSS placed third in the province in Combined Boys and Girls Skiing over the two days of races.
Fernie’s high team score, which is the sum of scores of its four top racers, shows that FSS has a big group of strong skiers instead of just one or two top racers.
“Even though no racers made it to the podium, placing only one point behind the second place team shows that Fernie builds strong skiers and riders,” said ski team coach Janet Kuijt. “It was a group effort which shows the strength of our team.”
Kuijt said it’s been a great season for the members of the FSS Ski and Snowboard Team, which attained several podium finishes at the East Kootenay Regional Competition at Panorama. FSS ski racers managed to place second overall and qualify for provincials.
