Kienna Boomer-Jones drained 12 points as the host Fulton Maroons grounded the Pleasant Valley Saints 54-28 in North Zone Junior Girls Basketball League action Wednesday night.
Abby Hughes added 10 points, while Jasmine Fox chipped in with eight for Fulton.
“I was really happy with our first game of the season,” said Fulton head coach Mike Scheller. “Our kids worked really hard on defence and were aggressive attacking the basket in offence. Our hustle and effort made a difference. It was a solid team effort and all 12 girls saw ample floor time.
“Jasmine Fox was tough under the boards and Boomer-Jones was very good on defence. I thought Hughes and Mackenzie Morin moved the ball for us very well.”
Fulton entertains the Kalamalka Lakers Wednesday night (6:30).
The VSS Grade 8 Panthers opened the girls basketball season by winning their home tournament Saturday.
Mike Bertram’s Cats brushed back Dr. Knox, of Kelowna 30-29 in a game which saw the lead switch several times.
It was 14-14 at the half with Knox holding a 27-22 lead in the middle of the fourth before the Panthers picked up the defence and made some timely buckets.
The score was tied at 29 when Kelsey Falk hit one of two free throws with 1.5 seconds left for the winning point. Falk finished with six points.
Emilia Durfeld led all scorers with nine points and did a great job of running the break and pushing the tempo. Abby Williamson and Jaide Vanderleest chipped in with four points apiece.
“Jaide played great defence and had lots of steals,” said Bertram. “Bree Vanderleest was player of the game for driving hard to the hoop and drawing fouls.”
Falk sank the first seven points of the game and finished with 21 as the Panthers ambushed the Sa-Hali Sabres of Kamloops 51-15 in their second tilt.
“Kelsey was dominant at the offensive end, taking the ball hard to the hoop and getting out on the break.”
Durfeld rang up 13 points and a dozen assists, while Williamson and Olivia Sawka ran the offence very well together. Jaide Vanderleest was player of the game for her tough defence.
“Ally Carter played great defence all weekend. Katie Peters, Savana Dewitt and Jesse Harman did a great job on the boards.
