The Fulton Maroons were undefeated going into quarterfinal playoff action Thursday night at the UBC Okanagan North Kelowna Gym.
Dan Currie’s crew topped Pool C Wednesday before brushing back the Princess Margaret Mustangs of Penticton 3-2 (25-23, 26-24, 23-25, 18-25, 15-11) in a thrilling first-round playoff match Thursday morning.
Fulton met the No. 1 ranked Okanagan Mission Huskies of Kelowna in the quarters at the 16-team B.C. Senior AA Boys Volleyball Championships.
“We’ve been unable to beat them in three tries this season, but everybody’s playing well and we’ve four juniors up with us so we’re pretty excited,” said Currie. “We’re looking to finish at least top-eight, that was our goal going in.”
The Maroons had not defeated the Mustangs until taking them in Thursday’s marathon. Kristian Currie and Karanmeet Khatra led the Maroon attack.
Okanagan Mission reached the quarters by stuffing Smithers Griffins Thursday morning.
In pool action, Fulton iced D.P. Todd Trojans of Prince George 2-0 (26-24, 25-15), grounded Prince Charles Comets of Creston 2-0 (25-17, 25-15) and outlasted Pacific Christian Pacers of Victoria 2-1 (25-23, 23-25, 15-7).
Meanwhile, Keith Becker’s VSS Panthers opened the senior AA girls provincials Thursday in Delta by brushing back the Rick Hansen Hurricanes of Clearbrook 2-0 (25-23, 25-17).
Maria Hansen’s Kalamalka Lakers toppled D.P. Todd 2-0 (25-13, 25-21) at the B.C. senior AA girls playdowns at Pacific Academy in Surrey.
Jason Reedyk’s Vernon Christian Royals lost 2-0 (25-12, 25-12) to the Mt. Sentinel Wildcats of South Slocan in opening play Thursday afternoon at the B.C. Senior A Girls Volleyball Championships in Chemainus.
The Royals faced the White Rock Christian Academy Warriors and the Mulgrave Titans of West Vancouver in later preliminary matches Thursday.
