Fulton Maroons in form at home tourney

Fulton Maroons place second in pool play at home senior girls volleyball tournament.

The Fulton Maroons went 2-1 to place second in their pool at their senior girls volleyball tournament Friday at Fulton gym.

Sharon Shaigec’s Maroons started the day by sweeping the NorKam Saints (25-19, 25-8) and Mt. Boucherie Bears of West Kelowna (25-23, 25-22). They fell to first-place Princess Margaret Mustangs of Penticton in two straight (25-16, 25-21).

Fulton battled the Kalamalka Lakers in Saturday crossover play. Kal ranked third in their pool of the eight-team tourney.

“I was pleased how our team played right from the first point of the tournament,” said Shaigec. “There was intensity on the floor and the Fulton fans were loud which really motivated the girls.”

Shaigec was pleased to see her hitters find a way to get balls past Boucherie’s tall blockers. Setter Nicole Olson connected with middle hitters Megan Rouault and Brittany Skrenek, which helped the Maroons’ outside hitters go one-on-one with the Bears’ blockers.

“We served very offensively as a team and once again our defence was stellar,” said Shaigec. “We fell short against No. 6 provincially ranked Princess Margaret. It’s definitely a game we would like back, but we will see them next weekend in the Okanagan Valley Championships.”

Power hitter Nazarena Wurz had 22 kills for the night, with Skrenek adding 11 and Aryana Jacura nine.

Maggie also went 2-1, icing fourth-place NorKam 25-19, 25-22 and falling 22-25, 25-23, 13-15 to Mt. Boucherie, who finished third.

The Vernon Panthers topped the B Pool, stopping Kal (25-21, 25-21), Sa-Hali Sabres of Kamloops (25-22, 22-25, 15-4) and the Valleyview Vikings of Kamloops (22-25, 25-11, 15-9).

Sa-Hali and Kal ranked second and third respectively. The Lakers win came against fourth-place Valleyview (25-20, 25-21).
