The Fulton Maroons faced the Surrey Christian Falcons in the quarterfinals Thursday night at the Big Kahuna B.C. High School Senior AA Boys Volleyball Championships at the Langley Events Centre.
Richard Bedard’s Maroons made the quarters by bouncing Ballenas Whalers of Parksville in first-round playoff action Thursday morning.
Fulton placed second in Pool A after grounding the Woodlands Warriors of Nanaimo 2-1 (20-25, 26-24, 15-11) and icing the Princess Margaret Mustangs of Penticton 2-0 (27-25 25-19). the MEI Eagles of Clearbrook swept the Maroons 25-7, 25-14.
MEI, 31-1 entering the 16-team tournament, opened with a 25-10, 25-18 victory over No. 3 seed Woodlands.
Princess Margaret, the fourth seed, arrived late Wednesday after their team bus slid into a ditch in the snow Tuesday near Princeton. No one on the bus was injured. The team had to spend Tuesday night in a Princeton hotel and couldn’t leave until Wednesday morning. The Mustangs forfeited their match against MEI.
The Seaton Sonics finished fourth in their pool, losing 2-1 (25-23, 20-25, 10-15) to Selkirk Highlands of Kimberley, falling 2-0 to Okanagan Mission Huskies of Kelowna and bowing 2-1 (26-24, 14-25, 9-15) to the Pacific Academy Breakers of Surrey.
Langley Christian Lightning stopped Seaton 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-14) in the playoffs.
At the B.C. Senior AA girls playdowns in Parksville, the VSS Panthers opened by falling 2-1 (25-15, 14-25, 15-11) Thursday morning.
Meanwhile, Fulton finished 11th in the 24-team provincial junior boys tournament at Mt. Boucherie in Kelowna last weekend.
Dan Currie’s shortstaffed Maroons brushed back the Claremont Spartans of Victoria 2-1 (25-16, 24-26, 15-10) in their final playoff match.
Earlier Saturday, No. 2 Pacific Academy downed Fulton 25-12, 25-15.
