Fun-filled golf tourney helps feed hungry

A reminder the fourth annual Thanks for Giving golf tournament is fast approaching, and organizers are hoping for a full field.

Slated for Fairwinds Golf  Club Saturday, Sept. 28, the popular (and important) fun-filled charity golf tournament is organized by Nanoose Community Services, which operates the Nanoose Bay Community Cupboard.

“The food bank in Nanoose struggles, as food banks do throughout the province, to provide groceries throughout the year,” says director Virginia Brucker, adding “we get lots of donations from October through December, but very little food or cash is donated from January through September. Because our food bank operates out of a very small space at Nanoose Place, rather than relying on donated food, we buy most of the groceries and toiletry items our food bank provides.”

To that end, the Thanks for Giving golf tournament “raises almost 50% of our annual operating budget.”

Coastal Community Credit Union and Fairwinds are the tournament’s major sponsors. Parksville Chrysler has donated hole in one insurance for a new vehicle, and Brian Dugaro from Investors Group has offered a $5,000 cash prize for a hole in one as well.

The auction will feature an autographed Trevor Linden jersey and the silent auction features terrific donations from local businesses and artists.

“You don’t have to be a dedicated golfer to participate,” says Brucker. “The emphasis is on fun and making new friends.”

The format is a four person scramble, and the entry fee of $110 includes 18 holes of golf, a cart, and dinner.

There is an early bird registration prize for entries received before Aug. 30. Pre-registration closes Sept. 23.

Those interesting in helping the cause can enter as a team, as a couple, or as individual players. To register go to www.nanoosecommunityservices.com.
