John Garvie only leaves the field when the half-time whistle goes.

Otherwise, he controls the VSS Panthers’ offence as quarterback and switched to defensive back on defence.

Garvie, a Grade 12 student, was named the B.C. AA Varsity Football Association Athlete of the Week.

He completed seven passes for 140 yards and three touchdowns as the Panthers ambushed the South Kamloops Titans 55-16 in their season opener last Friday at Hillside Stadium.

“John has performed at a high level in all of our games this year,” said VSS head coach Sean Smith. “He always makes great decisions with the ball and made two great long ball passes on Friday.”

Garvie, who also stars for the VSS basketball team, ran for a pair of rushing scores against South Kam.

Smith counts on Garvie to accomplish even more as the year moves forward.

“As we put more offence in this season, John will get a chance to pass more often and we’ll be putting even more on his shoulders,” said Smith.

The Cats host the Valleyview Vikings of Kamloops today (2 p.m.) at Grahame Park.

It is the season opener for Valleyview.
