The Quality Foods Oceanside Generals may have lost their only game last weekend, but the effort of goalie Matt Henwood did not go unrecognized by the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League.
Henwood, a 17-year-old from Comox in his second year with the team, stopped 54 of 57 shots in a 4-2 loss Friday at Campbell River. The final Campbell River score came on an empty-net goal in the final minute.
Henwood joined the team midway through last season as a 16-year-old rookie and played in 20 games, posting an 8-7 record with one shutout.
He has a 1-4 mark in the early going in the 2016-17 VIJHL season, with a 5.20 goals-against average and an .870 save percentage.
Gens highlight Breast Cancer Awareness in October
The Generals will kick off the month of October Saturday with a big home contest against league-leading Campbell River and the launch of a monthlong campaign to support breast cancer awareness.
The first 40 fans through the door for the Oct. 1 game will receive a free, pink Breast Cancer Awareness T-shirt. Fans are invited to wear their T-shirts to all the Generals home games in October to show support of breast cancer survivors and ongoing research for a cure. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and the puck drops at 7:30pm.
It is the first of a series of events the club will host throughout the month.
• Oct. 8 — The Generals celebrate World Girls Hockey Weekend in Oceanside.
• Oct. 15 — The Abreast of Life Dragon Boat Team will be at the arena to describe their activities in Parksville Qualicum Beach and beyond, encouraging breast cancer survivors. To support them, wear pink to the game and half of your admission price will be donated to The Abreast of Life Dragon Boat Team.
• Oct. 16 — Any Oceanside Minor Hockey player accompanied by a paying adult will be admitted free of charge.
