Gens trade Smith for Giomo

The Save–On–Foods Oceanside Generals aren’t quite finished making moves to try and improve their roster this season, making a deal over the Christmas break.

The Generals traded Brodie Smith, an 18-year-old from Parksville with BCHL experience, to the Westshore Wolves for forward Matteo Giomo and future considerations. Smith had seven goals and nine points in six games since being sent to the Generals by the BCHL Port Alberni Bulldogs, an average of 1.5 points a game that was tops on the Gens.

The move is one that, according to captain Cam Nickerson, will help the team going forward.

“I think it’s going to help us out,” Nickerson said. “Things weren’t really working out the way we’d hoped and I think the trade was something that needed to happen. We’re excited to get Giomo back, he’s a good player and I think he’ll fit right in.” Giomo, 17 years old from Courtenay, has played in 30 games for the Westshore Wolves this season, registering 14 points (eight goals, six assists) with only six minutes in penalties.

With two spots remaining on their roster, there’s still a chance the Generals could make a move or two before the deadline later this month.
