Students at George Bonner Elementary School in Mill Bay wrapped up their six-week-long Kilometre Challenge earlier this month.
Students from kindergarten up to Grade 7 ran around the school’s chip trail for 20 minutes, three times a week, collecting charms for their necklaces to mark their accomplishments.
The results were quick to appear.
“We had students in Grade 3 building up their stamina until they were able to run seven laps, which is equivalent to 3.5 kilometres, in 20 minutes,” Bonner teacher Bonnie Griffiths said.
The school benefited from the program in multiple ways, and is looking at other methods for promoting fitness and getting students outdoors.
“This annual program was great training for the Bonner track and field team, who had great success at the district elementary school track meet,” Griffiths said.
“Bonner also has put in a outdoor classroom and has plans to add a nature playground to encourage kids to encourage better physical literacy.”
