The Fernie Memorial Arena saw many Ghostriders fans in the seats, eager to cheer on the hometown team in their first regular game of the season at home. While the Ghostriders weren’t able to clinch the win, they did provide an entertaining game, only being decided in overtime. The final score was 3 to 2.
The 100 Mile House Wranglers were a strong match for the Ghostriders, who managed to outshoot the Wranglers 42 to 29. The Wranglers goalie, Zane Steeves, was working hard to protect his net, ultimately earning him a star performance.
“We had a goalie that shut the door on us,” said Ghostrider head coach, Craig Mohr. “We didn’t have finish around the net.”
The first period went scoreless, but the Wranglers were first on the scoreboard with a goal by Liam Cumberbirch. The Ghostriders answered with a power play goal by Keagan Kingwell, late in the second period.
The third period saw a replica of the second, with the Wranglers getting ahead only for the Ghostriders to come back. Alex Hanson scored for the Wranglers, while Ryan Teslak answered with another power play goal. And while it was an evenly matched game, the Wrangler’s goalie managed to keep out the Ghostrider’s advances, making it a battle of the goalies for the win.
Overall, Mohr said he is happy with the weekend’s games. The team earned three out of a possible four points after dominating the Golden Rockets 6 to 3 on Friday night. The Ghostriders’ line up is suffering from multiple injuries with six riders currently unable to play due to injury or suspension.
“In the positive, the young kids are getting good game time exposure,” said Mohr in regard to the injuries. “It shows that they are getting better already.”
The Ghostriders next game is Friday against Columbia Valley before facing off against the Revelstoke Grizzlies at home on Saturday. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
