The Vancouver Giants got an early jump on the Western Hockey League trade deadline, shipping out over-age forward Thomas Foster.
The Giants sent Foster — who is in his last season of major junior eligibility — to the Moose Jaw Warriors on Sunday. In exchange, the Giants receive 17-year-old forward Brayden Watts, a second round pick in the 2018 WHL bantam draft and a fifth round pick in this year’s draft. Vancouver also sends Moose Jaw their eighth round pick in this draft and a fifth round pick next year.
Foster had 10 goals and 28 points in 38 games for the Giants.
He played his entire WHL career with Vancouver after they selected him in the first round of the 2011 bantam draft, scoring 42 goals and 126 points in 259 regular season games.
Watts has four goals in 40 games for the Warriors.
This was one of two trades Vancouver has made as on Friday, they acquired forward Jordan Borstmayer from the Kelowna Rockets in exchange for a conditional fifth round pick.
In 32 games with the Rockets, the 19-year-old had three goals and seven points.
He joined the Giants for the tail-end of their five-game road trip, suiting up in the final two games.
Vancouver had won the first two games of the road trip, beating Calgary 5-4 in a shootout and winning 3-2 over Edmonton, but dropped the last three.
They lost 3-2 to Red Deer on Friday, 5-4 to Medicine Hat on Saturday, and then 3-2 to Kootenay on Sunday.
The Giants (16-23-1-2, 35 points) return to action on Friday when they host Foster and the Moose Jaw Warriors at the Langley Events Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
